KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim upset the defending AFC Champions League champions Kashima Antlers 1-0 on Wednesday, their first ever victory in the tournament.

In a closely fought match, both sides came up empty handed after a fierce first half, with the Malaysian side putting up a strong defense.

The turning point came in the 69th minute when Johor's forward Syafiq Ahmad dodged two Kashima players to score an impressive goal.

Johor's Gonzalo Cabrera missed a chance to make it 2-0 when his shot flied wide in the 76th minute.

Kashima appeared to be desperate towards the end, making two attempts in the injury time, but missed on both.

The victory keeps Johor's chance of qualifying for the next stage when they face South Korean side Gyeongnam on May 22.

Johor DT are still at the bottom of Group E, behind Gyeongnam, while China's Shandong Luneng already advanced after Wednesday's victory. Enditem
