SARAJEVO, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Northern and central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) were hit by heavy floods on Tuesday, flooding several hundred housing units, local media reported.

The most severe situation with flooding is seen in municipalities of Bosanska Krupa and Sanski Most, northwest of the capital Sarajevo, where state of natural disaster is declared.

The abundant rainfall caused streams and rivers to spill over in the municipalities, resulting in damage on roads, private houses, economic facilities and agricultural areas.

Schools and kindergartens are closed in Banja Luka, also northwest of the capital, after the state of emergency in parts of the city due to increased level of Vrbas river was declared by the mayor.

BiH's auto moto club (BIHAMK) reported on Tuesday that numerous escarpments and landslides occurred, closing several main roads in central part of the country.

BiH's Federal Administration of Civil Protection (FUCZ) issued an alert on Friday, warning citizens on possible floods in the following days.

The Ministry of Security also informed all institutions of protection and rescue in BiH and international partners on rainfall that could cause floods in the country.

Cloudy weather with rainfall is expected in the following days in western and northern regions of the country, according to Federal Hydrometeorological Institute (FHMZ).
