KABUL, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Several militants were either killed or injured after Afghan security forces repelled an attack by Taliban on a remote district in southern province of Zabul overnight, Afghan Ministry of Defense said Wednesday.

"The attack occurred after midnight when a dozens of Taliban militants stormed Shamulzay district center and tried to take control of the district, in southeast of provincial capital Qalat city," the ministry said in a statement.

The statement added that heavy clashes with the security forces foiled the enemy's plan to capture the remote district, bordering Pakistan.

"The clashes ended by early Wednesday and heavy casualties were inflected on the side of the militants," the statement said, adding reinforcement arrived at the district from ground and the air and the militants were fleeing from the area.

The security forces will follow the enemies and will eliminate them before they arrived into their hideouts in nearby mountains, according to the statement.

The statement did not disclose if there were any casualties on the side of security forces, saying details about the clashes will be shared with media later in the day.

Fighting rages across the war-torn country and clashes between security forces and Taliban have been continuing in at least 25 out of the country's 34 provinces since early April when Taliban launched a yearly rebel offensive.

Fighting between government forces and Taliban fighters often gets intense in spring and summer as the seasons are locally branded as the fighting time of year.

Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.
