VIENNA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Austrians have traveled a record 31 billion kilometres using public transport in 2018, Austrian transport club VCO revealed on Wednesday.

It said the total, which includes the use of rail, trams, buses, and the subway, marks an increase of about four billion kilometres over that seen in 2010.

It was noted however that car travel still significantly eclipses this amount, with about 83 billion kilometres traveled that way last year.

In order to meet government climate targets that aim to reduce CO2 emissions by about a third by 2030, it is necessary for more of this car travel to be shifted over to public transport.

For this, the VCO said, significantly more bus and rail networks are required, along with regional planning that reduces traffic, as well as greater tax incentives.
