RIO DE JANEIRO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Costa Rica national team captain Bryan Ruiz has returned to training with Brazilian club Santos as he bids to prove his fitness ahead of this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Ruiz, who has not played since last November because of a back injury, resumed training with the Santos squad at their Rei Pele training base on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old attacking midfielder has made only 14 first-team appearances for Santos since his July 2018 move from Sporting Lisbon.

He has been included in Costa Rica's preliminary 40-man squad for the Gold Cup, which will be played in the United States, Costa Rica and Jamaica from June 15 to July 7.

Los Ticos head coach Gustavo Matosas is expected to trim the squad to 23 players this week.

Costa Rica have been drawn in Group B for the continental tournament alongside Bermuda, Haiti and Nicaragua.
