KAMPALA, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Five Ugandan athletes have qualified for the 2019 IAAF World Championships scheduled for Doha, Qatar from Sept. 27-Oct. 6, a senior sports official said here on Wednesday.

Dominic Otuchet, the president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, told Xinhua in an interview that the five made it to the list even before the qualification to the event starts in three months.

"The IAAF World Championships is meant for the world's top athletes and I remain hopeful that we shall make a big number through qualification," added Otuchet.

Uganda's star athlete and double Commonwealth Games gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei, together with Stephen Kissa, Winnie Nanyondo and Peruth Chemutai qualified last weekend during the IAAF Shanghai Diamond League.

Halima Nakaayi qualified on Tuesday night when she finished third in the 800m in the IAAF World Challenge in Nanjing, China, according to Otuchet. Enditem
