GABORONE, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Mining companies in Botswana should seek innovation solutions and get ready to embrace digital trends in the industry, experts said here on Wednesday.

Creating new ideas for innovative technologies may radically transform the mining sector in Botswana, said Jean-Jacques Verhaeghe, a program manager of Mandela Mining Precinct in South Africa, at the two-day "Mining Investment Botswana" conference in the capital city Gaborone.

Botswanan mining companies should follow the example of China, seeking innovation solutions and reduce production costs, he added.

Bonny Matshediso, a senior geology lecturer at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology, said he appreciated the world's second largest economy's efforts in providing solutions to developing nations.

As many mining houses in Botswana will be going underground in the future, the miners should take full advantage of technological innovations sourced from China, he said. "China has a proven record in providing solutions to challenges that developing countries are facing on a daily basis."

The event, which has expanded beyond a dozen countries since 2016, attracted about 250 government officials, institutional investors, miners and business leaders from 15 countries to discuss the development of the mining industry.
