WINDHOEK, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Hage Geingob, Namibian president and chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), on Wednesday said his country is confident that South African president Cyril Ramaphosa will take South Africa forward.

In a congratulatory statement on Ramaphosa's victory, Geingob said Namibia intents to strengthen cooperation with South Africa to accelerate growth.

"The unanimous endorsement of president Ramaphosa by South Africans was a clear demonstration of the confidence people had in his leadership. Moreover, the SADC region has confidence in the ability of president Ramaphosa to take South Africa forward," said Geingob.

"I look forward to strengthening cooperation between Namibia and South Africa to accelerate economic growth and to meet the developmental aspirations of citizens in the two sister countries," he said.

Geingob also said he wishes Ramaphosa the best in his task of taking South Africa towards greater success.

Ramaphosa, leader of the African National Congress (ANC), was elected by South Africa's sixth parliament on Wednesday as the head of state. He will be inaugurated as the country's president on Saturday.
