BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- "SHAKUHACHI: One Sound, One life," a music documentary will be screened in China starting on May 31.

By portraying lives of Chinese, Japanese and American performers, producers and learners of Shakuhachi, the film reflects the challenges and hopes faced by time-honored musical instrument.

Originating from China's bamboo flute, Shakuhachi was introduced to Japan during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Its sound is noted for an ethereal and tranquil style.

The documentary depicts what sort of development that Shakuhachi, a sign of traditions, can realize in the modern society.

"The ancient time and modern time never confront each other," said the film director. "There is increasing chemistry between Shakuhachi and modern musics nowadays."
