RIO DE JANEIRO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- A second-half goal from Paraguay international defender Gustavo Gomez gave Palmeiras a 1-0 win over Botafogo on Saturday as the defending Brazilian Serie A champions extended their lead in the 20-team standings.

The AC Milan loanee converted from the penalty spot after Deyverson was brought down by Gabriel just after halftime at the Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasilia.

The result left Palmeiras four points clear of second-placed Atletico Mineiro with 16 points from six matches. Botafogo remained seventh, seven points behind the leaders.

In Saturday's only other Brazilian top-flight match, Gremio secured a 1-0 home win over Atletico Mineiro thanks to a 47th-minute strike from Felipe Vizeu.

It was Gremio's first win of the season and lifted the Porto Alegre side to 16th in the standings. Enditem
