DOHA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday received an invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to attend the summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), scheduled for May 30 in Mecca, state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

The Qatari emir received a written message from Saudi King Salman to attend the emergency GCC meeting in Mecca, QNA added.

The message was taken by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatari deputy prime minister and foreign minister, when he received in Doha on Sunday Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, GCC secretary general.

This is the first contact at the highest level between the two countries since Saudi Arabia along with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in June 2017 and has since imposed an embargo on the Gulf state, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism.

Qatar has repeatedly denied all the charges.
