JAKARTA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has set a target of 53 gold medals at the 2019 SEA Games in the Phillippines, officials said here today.

This represents a higher total than the country achieved in the most recent SEA Games in Malaysia in 2017, where Indonesia secured 38 gold, 63 silver and 90 bronze medals.

The target was made based on the number of sports featuring Indonesian athletes and their presumed strength in each sport, said committee member Octavianus Matakupan.

"The target was set after evaluating the capabilities of each athlete," Matakupan said on Sunday night.

The official added that the target could still be amended, with a final expectation set to be announced in October.

Committee chairman Erick Thohir said the upcoming 2019 SEA Games should serve as a stepping stone for the country's athletes to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Enditem
