Iraq's Kurdistan parliament elects new regional head

BAGHDAD, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The parliament of Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan on Tuesday elected Nechirvan Barzani as the new regional head, a Kurdish media said.

Barzani, who is the candidate of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), was elected with a majority of 68 votes out of 81 who attended the session of the 111-seat parliament, the Kurdish Rudaw media said.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the region's second biggest party, and the New Generation Movement boycotted the session over political disputes, Rudaw said.

The other four candidates running for the election got zero votes, it added.

Born in 1966, Nechirvan Barzani is a Kurdish politician who has been Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraqi Kurdistan region since March 2012. He also previously served as Prime Minister from March 2006 to August 2009. Enditem
