China plans to phase out expressway toll booths

BEIJING, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese provinces are making plans for replacing expressway toll booths at provincial borders with electronic toll collection (ETC) system, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said Tuesday.

Thirty provincial-level regions including Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei have already started making plans for the removal by May 27, of which 11 have proposed plans for promoting the application of ETC.

ETC technology will make toll payment non-stop and faster, Wu Chungeng, a spokesperson with the MOT, told a press conference.

Through the move, China aims to help solve the problem of expressway traffic congestion, enhance traffic efficiency and reduce logistics costs.
