BAGHDAD, May 28 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi court on Tuesday sentenced two French nationals to death over charges of joining Islamic State (IS) group, bringing the total number of French IS members sentenced to death to six within the past few days, a judicial source said.

The two Frenchmen, identified as Karam el-Harchaoui and Brahim Nejara, were sentenced to death after they were found guilty of joining the Daesh (IS group), the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The convicts have 30 days to appeal against the verdicts, the source said.

The two were handed over to Iraqi authorities by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in January among a group of 12 French citizens.

Earlier, the Iraqi court sentenced on Sunday and Monday four other French IS members to death over similar charges.

Thousands of IS fighters and supporters of various nationalities had joined the extremist group when it took control of large swathes in Iraq and neighboring Syria, but after the defeat of the extremist group in both countries, hundreds of IS loyalists were killed or captured.

Hundreds of IS militants were handed over by the SDF to Iraqi authorities over the past few months after the latest defeat of IS militants in al-Baghouz area, which was the last IS-held area in the eastern Euphrates River region in Syria's eastern Deir al-Zour province.
