CARACAS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's Supreme Court (TSJ) on Wednesday charged Rafael Guzman, a deputy in the opposition-controlled National Assembly, with crimes of treason against the homeland and conspiracy.

The court also said in a statement that Guzman was being charged with "usurpation of functions, instigating insurrection and civil rebellion."

Guzman will be tried in a regular court, according to the statement.

Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly has stripped several deputies of immunity for their involvement in an attempted coup on April 30.

Venezuela has been plunged into political unrest after opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself "interim president" in January.

Following Guaido's attempt to launch the military uprising, the Venezuelan prosecutor opened proceedings against a group of deputies of the National Assembly for their alleged role in the failed coup.
