FUZHOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- An expo on seafood and fishery trade opened Thursday in Fuzhou, the capital of east China's Fujian Province.

This year's China (Fuzhou) International Seafood & Fisheries Expo (FIFE) exhibits more than a thousand types of seafood products from 400 enterprises in 34 countries and regions, according to the organizer.

The two-day event is expected to receive a record number of 13,000 visitors from both home and abroad, the organizer said.

Fujian is known for being the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, which saw the exchange of merchandise by sea between China and countries in as far as East Africa and Europe.

Government representatives and diplomats from over 30 countries will hold discussions on promoting the Maritime Silk Road and the fishery industry during this year's expo.

First held in 2009, the FIFE is a national-level expo jointly organized by the 21st Century Maritime Cooperation Committee and China Fisheries Association.
