NEW DELHI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- An advisory has been issued by weather forecaster "Skymet" to farmers in India's southern states - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana to delay the sowing of crops to the second week of June as these states might witness delayed and week monsoon.

The normal date of southwest Monsoon around the southern state of Kerala was June 1, however, it got delayed and is now expected to hit the southern states on June 6, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said a few days ago.

Skymet advised the postponed sowing of seeds to reduce cost and improve crop yield. "It is to be noted that the caution has been issued for sowing of crops at this point of time, when the onset of Monsoon is delayed and chances of good amount of rains are less. It will only raise the cost for the farmers and hamper the yield of the crop," Skymet said in a statement.

Farmers of South India are advised not to grow crops like maize, tur and cotton, it added. Enditem
