ADEN, Yemen, June 5 (Xinhua) -- A Yemeni child was killed on Wednesday after being targeted by a Houthi sniper in the southwestern province of Taiz, a security official told Xinhua.

Amr Yaqoub, 13 years old, was killed in Asifra district located to the north part of Taiz province, said the official who asked to remain anonymous.

He confirmed that the child died immediately at the scene after receiving the deadly bullet in his head while moving near his house.

According to the source, areas near the district of Asifra where the incident took place are witnessing sporadic armed confrontations between the Yemeni government forces and the Houthi rebels.

On Tuesday, two Yemeni children were killed and six wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by the Houthis on a residential village in Misrakh district, about 30 km southwest of Taiz.

The Yemeni government forces, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, have been locked in clashes with the Iran-allied Houthi rebels in Taiz since April 2015.

Yemen has been mired into a civil war since late 2014, when Shiite Houthi rebels overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa.

The civil war has killed more than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, displaced 3 million others, and pushed Yemen to the brink of famine.
