DAMASCUS, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The rebel groups launched a fresh attack on Syrian military sites in the Hama province in central Syria on Friday, a day after they went on a major attack in that same area, a war monitor reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels are attacking new sites in the countryside of Hama as the Syrian army is fighting to retake the areas that had fallen to the rebels during the Thursday attack.

It said the rebels fired over 400 shells on areas controlled by the Syrian army on Friday ahead of their offensive on areas in the northern and northwestern countryside of Hama.

Over 60 fighters from both sides have so far been killed since Thursday, said the Observatory.

Areas of the countryside of Hama, Idlib and the Aleppo provinces are included in a de-escalation zones' deal established in September 2018 by Russia and Turkey.

The deal didn't materialize as battles have escalated since late April.
