HAIKOU, June 8 (Xinhua) -- In observance of World Oceans Day, which fell on Saturday, volunteer divers were rotating to take care of a wounded pilot whale aground in Sanya, a coastal city in south China's Hainan Province.

The pilot whale should be accompanied by professional divers underwater to help it move and breathe smoothly, said Pu Bingmei, a member of the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association based in Sanya.

Since Pu sent a message for help on her WeChat Moments Friday night, more than 10 divers had volunteered to look after the whale. With the care of professional divers, the whale started to recover.

"The rescue is of special significance on World Oceans Day," said Pu, calling for all people to care about oceans and protect the maritime environment and biodiversity.

The Association also conducted a beach-cleaning activity Thursday and local residents and tourists were called upon to clean the beaches and collect ocean waste, with almost 740 kg of waste collected.

Other activities, including a national contest on knowledge about the oceans and an exhibition on prevention and reduction of maritime disasters, were also held in Sanya to mark World Oceans Day.
