China on Friday was elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the coordinating body for the economic and social work of UN agencies and funds. China won 177 votes from the UN member states, who cast their votes at the General Assembly hall at the UN Headquarters in New York. A total of 18 new members were elected on Friday. Other elected members are Benin, Botswana, The Congo, Gabon, Bangladesh, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Latvia, Montenegro, the Russian Federation, Colombia, Nicaragua, Panama, Australia, Finland, Norway and Switzerland.
