BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan met with Syrian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Walid Mualem Monday in Beijing.

Wang said China and Syria, both ancient civilizations, have undergone glory and suffering and both value national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

"History and culture serve as the gene of a country and a nation," Wang said, calling on different civilizations to facilitate mutual understanding and respect each other for common development.

He stressed China firmly upholds the basic norms governing international relations as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and opposes interference in other countries' internal affairs.

China supports Syria in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and pursuing a path of development chosen by the Syrian people, Wang said, adding China stands ready to consolidate and develop friendly relations with Syria in all areas.

Mualem voiced Syria's sincere appreciation of China's development achievements and contribution to human civilization.

He thanked China's support and assistance to Syria, and said his country views China as a diplomatic priority.

Syria welcomes China's participation in its reconstruction process, and will actively participate in the Belt and Road Initiative to promote the development of bilateral ties, he said.
