BERLIN, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund and their Swiss head coach Lucien Favre have agreed on a further cooperation through 2020, the Bundesliga club announced in an official statement on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old coach has penned a contract extension ahead of schedule after putting pen to paper on deal until June 2021.

"He has fulfilled our expectations 100 percent. It is in consequence only logical that we want to shape the future together," Dortmund's chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said.

Favre took the reins at the "BVB" in May 2018 and helped the club to finish on the runners-up position despite personnel changes within the team. He also became the first-ever head coach to remain unbeaten in his first 15 Bundesliga encounters.

"I am looking forward in continuing a constructive and successful cooperation with the entire Borussia Dortmund team," Lucien Favre told the club's official homepage.

In his debut season, the Swiss were able to lead the club, on the second place of the Bundesliga standings with 76 points from 34 games, and into the UEFA Champions League's last 16 where they lost to finalists Tottenham Hotspur.

"Lucien has created clear structures and has developed our players," Dortmund's sporting director added.
