TAIPEI, June 22 (Xinhua) -- People from different walks of life in Taiwan attended a ceremony in Taipei Saturday to worship Fuxi, the legendary ancestor of the Chinese nation.

A delegation from Gansu Province in the Chinese mainland, where Fuxi was believed to be born several thousand years ago, also attended the ceremony.

Worshippers offered sacrifices to the statue of Fuxi, where they presented flower bouquets, read prayers and bowed. A team of drummers performed before the ceremony.

This was the sixth year for the mainland and Taiwan to simultaneously hold worshipping ceremonies for Fuxi. On Saturday, a ceremony was also held in Tianshui of Gansu.

Wang Zhenyu, a delegate from Gansu attending the ceremony in Taiwan, said the events can help enhance the bonds between Chinese compatriots across the Taiwan Strait and also help promote economic and cultural exchanges.

Lee Chien-lung from Xianse Temple in New Taipei City, said many people in Taiwan go to the mainland in recent years to attend ceremonies worshipping legendary Chinese ancestors, proving that people from the two sides have the same origin.

Fuxi is believed to be the inventor of writing, fishing and hunting. Unearthed millennia-old stone carvings depict Fuxi as half-human, half-snake.
