Indonesia vows to defend champion title in 2020 ASEAN Para Games

JAKARTA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has set a target of first place during the forthcoming 2020 ASEAN Para Games in the Philippines later next year, the country's National Paralympic Committee (NPC) said here on Monday.

"Hopefully the contingent can achieve the best result, the target is to become champions," said Senny Marbun, chairman of the NPC.

The chairman was confident that the country's contingent could secure the most gold medals during the regional sport event.

Indonesian Youth and Sport Minister Imam Nahrawi said that the government would give its full support to the athletes and expected significant achievements.

Minister Nahrawi encouraged the recurrent training camp for the contingent to continue and expand.

In the last 2017 ASEAN Para Games in Malaysia, Indonesia became champions of the sports event by securing 126 gold medals in what was repeat result of the country's victory in the 2014 ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar with 99 gold medals.

The 2020 ASEAN Para Games is a biannual multi-sport event that starts after 2018 SEA Games in the Philippines for athletes with physical disabilities.

The sport event is scheduled to be held from January 18 to 25 with 11 South-east Asian nations participating in the event.
