CAIRO, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Algeria stepped into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after achieving a 1-0 win over Senegal here on Thursday night in their second match of Group C.

Algeria's forward Mohamed Youcef Belaili scored the winner in the 49th minute, although Liverpool star Sadio Mane's Senegal had 55 percent of the ball possession.

Algeria beat Kenya 2-0 in their Group C opener on Sunday, and will meet Tanzania in the third match.

Having three points from beating Tanzania, Senegal are still hopeful for the knockouts, while Kenya and Tanzania, both defeated in their opening games, will meet later on Thursday.

In Group B, Madagascar edged Burundi 1-0 on Thursday with a goal by midfielder Marco Ilaimaharitra in the 76th minute.

With a previous draw with Guinea, Madagascar have become the second of Group B next to Nigeria who won their first two matches against Guinea and Burundi. The top two are set for a confrontation end of June.

Hosted by Egypt, the 32nd edition of the AFCON kicked off on June 21 and will close on July 19.
