BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers on Thursday called for more efforts to create better environment for the development of China's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

A report on the enforcement of the newly-revised Law on Promotion of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises was submitted to the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee for review at its ongoing bimonthly session.

Local implementation of national policies on promoting SME development should be strengthened, said Yan Baoling, an NPC deputy, when deliberating the report during panel discussions.

Lawmaker Zhang Yong suggested people's congresses check and revise local regulations to stay in line with the law to create fair market environment for SMEs.

Noting that the law has played an instrumental role in the development of China's SMEs and private companies, lawmaker Xie Guangxiang proposed strengthening supervision to protect SMEs' legal rights and interests.

"More regular inspections should be conducted to oversee the management and use of funds for SMEs," he said.
