SOFIA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- A traffic police patrol in Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Burgas has captured 55 kg of heroin transported by a drugged driver, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

During a routine check of a van at the entrance of the city on Sunday, the policemen noticed the unusual behavior of the driver, a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen, the statement said.

An immediate drug test found that he was under the influence of methamphetamines, the statement said.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the heroin was split into 110 packets hidden in a secret compartment, it said.

Authorities estimated that the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 1.45 million U.S. dollars.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene, the statement said, adding that the investigation is under way.
