BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

LEAD DETECTION

A Chinese research team has developed an effective colorimetric method to detect lead contamination in water via fluorescent test strips.

The research team with the Institute of Intelligent Machines, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed fluorescent nanoprobes with the proportional mixing of blue carbon dots and red carbon dots. As the amount of lead ions increases, the coloring changes from blue to red with UV light in five minutes.

NANOSPONGE

Scientists from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed the new type of hydrophobic nanosponge with amino silicon oil and silane coupling agent, which can effectively absorb diesel in water and soil under various conditions.

The sponge provided a promising and low-cost approach for diesel control and removal, showing great potential in environmental and agricultural fields.

VR TREATMENT

More than 1,000 drug users in Shanghai have undergone an eight-month virtual reality treatment program over the last three years to overcome their addiction.

Users wearing a headset see several common drug use scenarios displayed through VR software. The headset is equipped with an infrared eye-tracker that can detect what they are looking at and for how long.

The VR system simulates drug-craving cues in order to collect psychological data to evaluate addicts and help them off drugs. Their biological indicators, such as heart rate and skin conductivity, are recorded at the same time. Enditem
