JAKARTA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Young chess players from Indonesia will look to obtain gold medals in the ongoing 2019 Asian Junior Open & Girls U-20 in Solo, Central Java province, it was confirmed on Tuesday.

The 2019 Asian Junior Open & Girl U-20 commenced on July 1 and will end on July 9, taking place in Lorin Hotel, head of sport development of the Indonesian chess association Krisitinus Liem said in Solo.

"We want there to be some Indonesian chess players securing gold medals," he said.

In last Asian Junior Open & Girl U-20 taking place in Mongolia, Indonesian chess player Novendra Priasmoro became champion of the tournament, Liem cited.

The competition in the tournament is tough as the chess players vying in the championship are classified as the best chess players in their countries and regions, Liem was quoted by Kompas media as saying.

Head of the committee of the tournament Dwi Hatmisari said that Indonesia would made this event a stepping stone to other international tournament at a higher level.

"We hope that Indonesian chess players could also get experience and knowledge. This will create motivation to keep them moving forward," she said.

Hatmisari said should the establishment of this event be a success, Indonesia will gain trust from the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and Asian Chess Federation to stage future events.

"We hope that being host, we will be able to include more domestic chess players in international tournaments," she said.
