RAMALLAH, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A senior official in Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said on Friday that political ties with the United States can be resumed on condition that Washington commits itself to the peace process.

"If the current U.S. government wants to resume political contacts with the Palestinian leadership, it should announce that East Jerusalem is occupied and terminate the decision of annexing the city to Israel," said Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the PLO Executive Committee, in an e-mailed press statement.

Erekat made the remarks during his meeting with an academic U.S. delegation held in Ramallah earlier in the day.

He also asked the United States to declare the two-state solution along the 1967 border as the goal of the peace process and resolve all final status issues according to the international resolutions.

"These are not Palestinian conditions, but references that had been agreed upon over the past 20 years with the former U.S. governments and the whole world," said Erekat.

Political ties between the Palestinian Authority and the United States were severed after U.S. President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December 2017. Washington moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May last year.
