BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- "Rice Road," a six-episode documentary on relations between rice and human civilization, has been aired by China Central Television and online platform Youku starting Saturday.

As the staple food for nearly 60 percent of the world's entire population, rice has perhaps been one of the most important food for human beings, said Dong Haomin, chief director of the documentary.

China is the original home of rice, which over the past several millennia has been introduced to different places and help foster close connections among them, Dong said.

With its specific perspective on the role of rice, the documentary gives insight into interaction between Chinese civilization and other civilizations as well as the forming of a shared cultural sphere in Asia, Dong added.

The documentary was produced by the China Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio.
