Oman announces preliminary lists of candidates for parliament election

MUSCAT, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Omani Interior Ministry announced on Sunday the preliminary lists of candidates for the election of the Consultative Assembly, lower house of the parliament, scheduled for October.

According to the lists published by the official website of the Consultative Assembly election, the number of candidates is 767 including 43 women.

A ministry statement said any objection to the lists of candidates could be raised in five days.

The Consultative Assembly of Oman consists of 85 members representing all states of the country with an election held every four years.

The other chamber of the parliament is the Council of State whose 84 members are appointed directly by royal decrees.

There are 16 female members in the Omani parliament, with only one in the Consultative Assembly, and 15 in the Council of State.
