DHAKA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Former Bangladeshi President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, who ruled the country from 1982 to 1990, passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 89 in a hospital in capital Dhaka.

The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) of the Bangladesh Army made the announcement on Sunday morning.

He breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at 7:45 a.m. local time, ISPR said.

Ershad was admitted to the CMH on June 26 and was put on life support on July 4 as his condition deteriorated.

Ershad's Jatiya Party is a key ally of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League (AL)-led alliance government.

Ershad's younger brother GM Quader, a former minister, is now Jatiya Party's acting chairman.

Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Ershad.
