GWANGJU, South Korea, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Mayya Gurbanberdieva and Aleksandr Maltsev took gold in the mixed duet technical at the 18th FINA World Championships here on Monday.

Gurbanberdieva and Maltsev, who set the early pace in the heats, finished first with 92.0749 points, 1.2238 ahead of defending champions Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini of Italy.

This is the first time that a Russian pair has won a mixed duet artistic swimming gold since the category was introduced at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan. Russia took silver that year and in 2017 in Budapest.

Russia had already taken gold in the women's solo technical and duet technical categories, while Atsushi Abe and Yumi Adachi of Japan took the mixed duet bronze with 88.5113, winning the country's first medal in the event.
