TAIPEI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's instantaneous power consumption on Tuesday reached 36.93 million kilowatts due to heatwaves, the second-highest level in history, according to the Taiwan Power Company.

The instantaneous power consumption peak on Tuesday occurred at 1:49 p.m., about 670,000 kilowatts higher than the peak on Monday, the company said. The all-time record high instantaneous power consumption in Taiwan took place on Aug. 1 last year, reaching 37.35 million kilowatts.

Temperatures across the island exceeded 33 degrees Celsius on Tuesday due to a tropical depression and typhoon outer downdraft, according to local meteorological authorities.

The power company said there was no problem providing sufficient electricity on Tuesday as power supply this year is generally ampler than before.

In recent years, however, the island has faced power shortages and power cuts in summer.
