MADRID, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid on Wednesday confirmed the extent of the knee injury suffered by Spain international forward Marco Asensio during Tuesday night's 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions Cup game played in Washington DC.

Asensio, who scored the equalizing goal in the game, fell badly with around 25 minutes remaining and had to be carried from the pitch holding his left knee and in obvious pain.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane commented after the game that the club was worried by the extent of the injury and tests carried out on Wednesday have confirmed that the 23-year-old has torn both his cruciate and meniscus ligaments.

"After tests carried out on our player Marco Asensio by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external meniscus of his left knee. The player will be surgically operated on in the next few days," confirmed the Real Madrid website.

The injury means Asensio will be out of action for a minimum of six months and probably more and although the club has plenty of attacking talent following the signing of Eden Hazard, Rodrygo and Luka Jovic over the summer, Asensio's injury could change Real Madrid's transfer plans between now and the end of August.
