BERLIN, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus has been voted the Footballer of the Year 2019, the German sports magazine kicker announced on Sunday.
It is the second time, after 2012, that the 30-year-old German international received the most votes from the Association of German Sports Journalists in the annual poll by the kicker.
Reus received 158 of the 540 votes from the journalists, putting him over Bayer Leverkusen's youngster Kai Havertz (121 votes) and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich (35 votes).
The team captain of the BVB provided 17 goals and 12 assists in 27 Bundesliga games in the past season. Reus has scored 115 goals in 238 games since joining in 2012.
"It is nicer than it was seven years ago. It is a different feeling if you have only three or four years to play. With every title I get more emotional than before," Reus told the kicker.
The women's competition has been introduced in 1996 and Olympique Lyon's Dzsenifer Marozsan has won the title for the third straight time now (159 votes). Wolfsburg's Alexandra Popp finished on the second place (81 votes) followed by Freiburg's Giulia Gwinn (40 votes).
Meanwhile, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp, who won the UEFA Champions League last season, has been named as Coach of the Year for the third time (183 votes), after 2011 and 2012.
"Thank you very much for this great award. Of course, I know whom I owe them to: my team and my coaching staff. Only in a collective you can achieve such successes as we have achieved," Klopp said.
Fortuna Dusseldorf head coach Friedhelm Funkel finished on the second place with 139 votes, while Eintracht Frankfurt's head coach Adi Huetter received 56 of the votes.
"I am also happy for Friedhelm Funkel and Adi Hutter, whose great work has ben recognized by the sports journalists," Klopp added.
