BEIRUT, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister Saad Hariri said Tuesday that Lebanon must act fast to catch up with developments in electronic trade around the world, a statement by the prime minister's office reported.

"My government will surely work in this direction by supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) working in electronic trade," Hariri said during a roundtable organized by the prime minister's office and the World Bank to discuss ways of supporting SMEs in reaching global markets through electronic trade.

Hariri said that the problem in Lebanon is that some people are resistant to change which is why this sector is witnessing a slowdown in its growth.

"However, we have today a team specialized in this field working with the World Bank on this issue and we, as a government, will provide them with the needed tools to reach our goals by ratifying the needed laws and regulations," he said.

Meanwhile, Saroj Kumar Jha, regional director for World Bank Middle East Department, said that the World Bank has launched a project aimed at supporting SMEs managed by women in Lebanon to reach global markets through electronic trade platforms.

"We offer them training, consultancy services in addition to enhancing their electronic trade systems," he said.
