UNITED NATIONS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy said Tuesday the humanitarian issues in Syria should be properly tackled, especially those with regard to the camps hosting Internally Displaced Persons.
Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, particularly pointed to the situation in the Al-Hol and Rukban camps, which are facing humanitarian challenges due to complex reasons.
The military hostilities in northeast Syria have led to the displacement of civilians, especially women and children, and made Al-Hol camp what it is like today, Wu noted at a Security Council meeting on Syria.
Given the complex composition of the camp's population, he said, it is important to tailor a responsible solution for the settlement of its inhabitants.
With regard to Rukban, he said the vast majority of its inhabitants want to go back home, and therefore, the international community should, through coordinated actions, help them end their displacement.
Al-Hol, in northeast Syria, is a camp that mushroomed earlier this year to house tens of thousands of refugees and displaced persons, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The United Nations said last week that the camp's population is around 70,000, including some 10,000 third-country nationals, with an overwhelming majority of them being children.
In mid-July, a UN spokesman said some 25,000 displaced people were living in "dire conditions" in the Rukban camp in southeast Syria along the border with Jordan.
He said the camp's residents had limited or no access to health care, basic food and other humanitarian assistance.
