MEXICAN CITY, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The offices of a local newspaper in northern Mexico were attacked with crude firebombs on Wednesday and decided to temporarily stop printing.

After the firebombing, the "El Monitor de Parral" newspaper in Parral City in the northern border state of Chihuahua said it will continue publishing its digital edition but will abandon covering crime-stories, without giving specifics regarding the attack.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to put out the fire and rescued five employees from inside the building.

The police said the arsonists remain unidentified. They had disabled security cameras and then managed to flee the scene.

The state prosecutor's office in Chihuahua condemned the attack and promised an "exhaustive investigation," it said in a statement.

As rampant drug and gang crimes have long plagued Chihuahua, many newspapers in border cities remained silent on crime stories for fear of irritating the gangs.
