TAIPEI, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- About 40 percent of the people over 65 years old in Taiwan suffer from hearing loss, meaning up to 1.37 million of the elderly on the island are hearing impaired, according to a survey released by the PSA Charitable Foundation.

About one-third of the elderly population worldwide suffer from hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The survey found less than three percent of those found hearing impaired went for further medical treatment after going through community-level screenings, meaning they have low willingness to voluntarily go to the hospital without help from external medical resources.

The survey looked at the hearing examination reports of 9,055 people from 2016 until earlier this year, the foundation said.

The foundation urged the public to raise their awareness of hearing problems and go to the hospital in time for further treatment when they are found to be hearing impaired.
