Australia dominate Day 2 of FINA World Cup

TOKYO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Australia took five golds while Japan dominated the men's 1500m freestyle final at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup here on Saturday, with 12 final events held on the tournament's second day.

The three-day competition will last through the weekend, marking the first stop of the 2019 FINA season.

In the mixed 4x100m freestyle, Australia won the gold medal in 3:24.89, breaking the FINA World Cup record of 3:27.42, while Hungary and Singapore came second and third respectively.

In the men's 1500m freestyle final, Japanese athletes occupied the top five places, with Syogo Takeda claiming the title in a time of 15:07.05.

The women's 400m individual medley final saw Katinka Hosszu of Hungary win gold in 4:32.30, which lowered her own FINA World Cup record of 4:33.88 set in 2015. She was followed by Yui Ohhashi of Japan and Mireia Belmonte of Spain.

Vladimir Morozov of Russia topped the men's 50m backstroke with 24.53, while 26.78 was enough for Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus to emerge victorious in the men's 50m breaststroke.

There was also fierce competition in the finals of women's 200m freestyle and men's 200m individual medley, both won by Australian swimmers. Brianna Throssell took the freestyle in 1:56.99 and Mitchell Larkin won the medley in 1:57.06, smashing the FINA World Cup record of 1:58.46.

The finals of the men's 200m butterfly and men's 100m freestyle also took place on the second day of the competition. Nao Horomura of Japan finished in 1:55.25 to win the butterfly, while Morozov took his second gold medal of the day in the freestyle, winning in 48.12.

Also taking place on Saturday were the finals of the women's 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke. South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker won the breaststroke in 1:06.54, while Holly Barratt and Emily Seebohm, both from Australia, respectively scooped the butterfly in 25.96 and the backstroke in 59.44.

The last day of competition will play host to another 12 events, including the finals of the women's 800m freestyle and the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

The 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup in Tokyo includes 34 events: 16 per gender and two mixed relays. The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
