DAMASCUS, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Syria's First Lady Asma al-Assad declared on Saturday her full recovery from breast cancer.

"My journey with cancer is over," the First Lady said during a televised interview with the Syrian state TV aired Saturday.

The 43-year-old Asma said her journey with the medical treatment passed with the support of her children and husband President Bashar al-Assad, who has been seen with her in footages documenting her treatment in the capital Damascus.

Al-Assad also hailed the medical care provided in Syria, saying that after eight years of war, the country is still capable of providing qualitative treatment for cancer patients.

The First Lady started treatment for breast cancer in August of 2018.

At the time, the presidential media office stated that al-Assad has started her preliminary treatment of a malignant tumor that had been discovered at an early stage in the breast.

Born and raised to a Syrian family in London, al-Assad graduated from King's College London in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in computer science and French literature.

She had a career in investment banking and was set to begin an MBA at Harvard University when she married Bashar al-Assad in December 2000.

During her life as a First Lady, Asma al-Assad has supervised several projects in the country, creating a collection of organizations that functioned under the charity sector of the government, referred to as the Syrian Trust for Development.

Basma is one of the charity organizations the First Lady created, which takes care of children with cancer.
