BEIRUT, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's Defense Ministry is working on expanding the deployment of Lebanese army in the land and sea to protect the country's territories and wealth, the National News Agency reported on Monday.
Defense Minister Elias Bou Saab said on Monday that "our army today is deployed on the northern, southern and eastern borders and we are working on expanding its presence in the sea to protect our economic zone and our oil and gas wealth."
He made the remarks at a ceremony held in Keserwan to celebrate the opening of a new square for the Lebanese army.
Bou Saab said that "the army is spread for the first time in these areas at 2,300 meters above the sea level while it created 74 new locations to protect the country's borders from terrorists and smugglers."
The minister also emphasized the big responsibilities assumed by the army in protecting Lebanon internally in addition to shielding borders against any violations.
