LUSAKA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The head of Zambia's soccer governing body on Friday commended the women's senior and Under-20 national teams for reaching the finals of the 2019 Council of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) Women's Championships.

The senior team stormed into the final of the tournament after beating Botswana 4-0 while the U-20 team edged Zimbabwe 1-0 to meet Tanzania in the finals.

Andrew Kamanga, president of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), congratulated the teams for reaching the COSAFA finals.

"This underscores the importance we have attached to women's football as an executive. The women's teams have excelled at a time the men's team did not qualify to the Africa Cup of Nations," he said.

The soccer chief said the growth of women's football had been seen in the steady rise in local players being signed by European clubs.

The association, he said, will continue building on the success with efforts to have a full national league firmly in motion in the near future.
