BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- About 62 percent of Chinese are ready to participate in volunteer work for environmental purpose, according to a survey done by China Youth Daily.

Close to 55 percent of the 2,000 respondents said they are interested in community service, and 44 percent would like to make contributions to improving education, the newspaper said.

"By doing volunteer work, I get to know local people and become more patient and perseverant," Gu Hui, a college student volunteer, told the newspaper.

From personal experience, Gu suggested that universities should motivate students to contribute to the public good by exposing them to positive feedback from other volunteers.

The poll results were based on answers mostly from respondents born in the 1980s and 1990s.
