TEHRAN, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Sunday that the U.S. recent agreement to create a safe zone in northeastern Syria is "provocative," official IRNA news agency reported.

Such actions are interference in Syria's internal affairs and a clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, said Mousavi.

Besides, it would destabilize and cause insecurity in the region, he added.

On Aug. 7, Turkey and the United States agreed on the establishment of a Joint Operations Center for the coordination and management of the planned safe zone in northern Syria.
