HEFEI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 76 suspects have been arrested and prosecuted for telecom fraud in east China's Anhui Province, according to local police.

In April last year, a Taobao shop owner reported to police in the city of Tongling that they were cheated out of about 40,000 yuan (about 5,674 U.S. dollars) on a platform claiming to help promote the store.

After two months of investigation, police discovered that a Xiamen-based network technology company, which was established in 2014 and has set up eight branches in several cities, had been seducing online store owners to spend money on so-called promotion channels such as placing advertisements and becoming franchises on its two fake platforms.

In July last year, police conducted an operation and arrested 76 suspects, including the prime culprit. The case involves over 8,000 victims and an estimated 40 million yuan, according to the police.

All the suspects have been prosecuted.
